    James Provenzano surveys his Johnstown sales floor and smiles at the sight of customers and sales people hunched over paperwork. The dealership, rechristened James Chevrolet in January as part of an ongoing rebranding, is one of three Provenzano owns between Johnstown and Rochester. The way Provenzano tells it, he was born to sell cars. Born and raised in Amsterdam, he got into the business early, learning the sales game from his father, who ran a Fulton County auto parts store.

    After graduating in from Amsterdam High School, the son became a car salesman. At 20, he had a management position. He knew what he wanted to do.

    As he recalls, that first foray into selling cars was a learning experience — in how not to sell cars. Only 39, he is approaching two decades in the car business, living in Baldwinsville with his wife and three children. In interviews he talked about his introduction to car selling, his business philosophy and his rebranding efforts. Some answers have been edited for clarity or space. You started out as a sales rep as a year-old. Your dad worked in the auto parts business. Were you always a car guy?

    I helped as a kid, so it was natural for me to go straight in to the car business from school. I am a people person and have always enjoyed helping families solve their wants and needs. The car business is such an exciting industry that I never contemplated doing anything else. I would probably be doing something else in the sales industry. I enjoy talking to people. It would have to be public-relations work. Turning to a pair of receptionists at his dealership.

    Would you vote for me? The car business has a bad rap. I soon found out that helping people find the right vehicle for their needs was fulfilling.

    Driving away in a nicer, newer car is the reward people deserve for working so hard. It is great to be part of that. They were forcing dealers to push them onto customers, not caring or listening to customer wants and needs. GM has turned around their business culture to being very proactive to current market demands. Dealers have all sorts of trademark phrases. How critical is it for car dealers to hit upon a catchphrase that can get through the clutter and stick with the car-buying public?

    Marketing with a consistent, clear message is important. It must express the true culture of the dealership. It has to communicate accountability to empower your employees to go above and beyond to satisfy your customers. Imagine trying to Google search that. There is nothing special about James, right? I sound like your chauffeur: I would operate a foreign car dealership. I personally enjoy selling and driving the American models. How has your business changed with plummeting gas prices?

    How has this changed in terms of different models moving? You do see customers who are embracing the larger pickup trucks. Maybe I will go with a full-sized pickup truck instead of a full-sized car. And the biggest selling feature is they get so much better gas mileage than they did 10 years ago.
