    Infiniti M45 Retro Review | Clavey's Corner

Infiniti describes its new M45 as a "sport sedan. As the company wins accolades and "of the Year" competitions with its superbly executed G35, the idea of a Q45 Vpowered machine built around BMW 5 Series pretensions and dimensions is a worthy notion. A few years ago, Lincoln launched its own sport sedan that also targeted 5 Series packaging. It, too, proved an "of the Year" winner. The LS both V-8 and V-6 versions received a freshening for '03, built around even better handling, ride, and steering, more power, and an upgraded interior.

Are they real sport sedans, or is the proclaimed sport factor limited to their ability to carry two sets of golf clubs in their trunks? Based on the Japanese-market Gloria and Cedric sedans, but packing the Q45's 4. But, unlike that flagship full-sizer, the M45 feels as if it has fully grown horses.

The aluminum-alloy DOHC engine complements this power with lb-ft of torque and delivers it through a smooth, five-speed automatic transmission with manumatic control. The M packs plenty of electronic handling and safety gear, including vehicle dynamic control, an integral traction-control system, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, and vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering.

The ride hardware consists of independent struts with coil springs in front and an independent multilink suspension in the rear. The interior is tasteful, with a number of high-tech touches from the Q45, like climate-controlled seats and a navigation system with voice recognition, as well as Intelligent Cruise Control, which employs lasers to maintain the car's distance from others on the highway.

The upright tilt of the center console, housing the nav system and the stereo controls, gives the interior a straight-up, minivan feel. The interface for those systems takes a lot of learning before it's easy to use, but the M's voice-recognition system is one of the best.

A new texture for the LS IP, heated and cooled seats, and the first automotive application of the THX stereo system, as certified by filmmaker George Lucas' sound company. Lincoln 's LS enters the ring as a known quantity. It was Motor Trend's Car of the Year for , a product we said, "wholly changes the image of what an American luxury sedan can be.

In our V-8 test car, that's good for an extra 13 horses to at rpm , while torque is up an impressive 34 lb-ft, to at As with the M45, this engine is mated to a five-speed automatic with manumatic control. Lincoln has redesigned the interior to get twice the stowage space, with a revised center console, a new console overhead, and larger map pockets in the doors. The vinyl grain for the instrument panel is new, and the passenger-side airbag cover is now seamless. Heated and cooled seats are optional here, too, as is the first automotive application of the THX stereo system, as certified by filmmaker George Lucas' sound company.

The most important revisions to the LS, however, are saved for the chassis. It has a ZF Servotronic II steering system and all-new wheels, tires, springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars. A revised Sport suspension is optional on the V-6 and standard, for the first time, on the V Lincoln also has tweaked the AdvanceTrac traction and stability-control system to curb understeer. With two engine options, the Lincoln LS competes in two luxury subsegments: The V-8 takes on the Mthat's why we're here--and both the Lincoln and the Infiniti are competing as somewhat of a value-priced i.

While both cars are generally the same size as the 5 Series, the LS is better packaged than the Japanese intender. The Infiniti is 3. It was originally developed for the Japanese market, and that country's tax laws favor narrower-bodied cars. Both offer enough power adjustment to make most any driver comfortable behind the wheel, and both have firm seats with good bolstering to enhance the sport-sedan game. Rear-seat head, leg, and shoulder space in either car is comfortable--few passengers would have reason to complain about spending time back there on a cross-country trip.
