User Name Remember Me? How long will a timing belt last? I have a NK Pajero which currently has ,km on the clock. It has been well looked after and has a full logbook service to go with it. The timing belts were due and done at the following kms: First Due at 90, and Done at 90, Second Due at , and Done at , The log book stops at ,km and the last service was done at ,km.

I'm assuming the third timing belt was done at about ,00km and the fourth should be due at ,km If the timing belt wasn't done at ,km would it still be in one piece? How long will it last? There are no guarantee as to the life, but by probability and statistics, there are recommended replacement intervals. Replacing it is not a guarantee that it will not break before it's recommended replacement time, but only lessens the risk. A brand new belt can have a flaw in it, resulting in premature failure.

If in doubt, replace it! Given the recommended 90k change frequency I would be very surprised if a belt failed at less than k from new. The designer needs to keep a healthy safety margin! Timing belt kit comes with idler and tensioner pulleys as well as cam and crank seals, so these should've been done with other changes. If in doubt, do the belt etc. It's an expensive job to get done see other thread but even more expensive to repair if the timing belt breaks.

I'll have to wait until I have a job and some money flowing again before I can do much about it. I'm not mechanically minded but I used to work in a computer shop pulling apart computers and laptops and then putting them back together. I wonder if they're similar. Thanks for all your help guys. Have just replaced timing belt they say you should have it done every ,kms along with the water pump!! Timing belts are good for k as others have said, if you are not certain when it was last done, then my theory is that its better to be safe then sorry and just get it done now because if it fails your talking a LOT of dollars Some engines are referred to as "free spinners" because they will spin freely after a cam belt breaks.

You need to KNOW that the belt was last changed within the recommended service interval. If you don't KNOW how old your timing belt is you can't afford to not change it. Change it, and you will KNOW how old it is. I've heard that most manufacturers are returning to timing chains - because belts are simply too unreliable. Fully engineered in SA. If I had the money to replace it I would. Right now I'm between jobs and I can't afford it, but because I don't have a job I'm driving it less and I live within walking distance of everywhere I want to go.
